Goals!
Now that I have a little bit of visibility on where I'll live in 2018 and 2019, I was able to make some plan to return to derby!
I decide to set goals, and went with a laid back approach based on the system we use with the men's national team.
It's laid back in the sense that I don't stick with a strict 'smart' system: not all my goals are Specific, Measurable, or Time bound. I did make sure they'd be Achievable and Realistic, and set them using a rough time line we also use for our team.
Here is the detailed process I went through:
First I targeted a life long objective and a Big Hairy Audacious Goal:
-Being functionally fit and healthy for as long as possible,
-Playing at a specific high level roller derby.
I then build the picture of what I think both things look like and require from me, mostly in term of process goals rather than outcomes. Outcome goals are important too, and I will add more of these later on, but with the visibility I have now I decided to heavily focus on aspects I could both control and be instinctive with.
I estimated how long it would take me to reach a satisfying base level of functional fitness for the life long goal, and how long it would take me to get back to competitive shape on and off the track. There is no way to know for sure, and details are guaranteed to move both faster and slower than planned, but it's good to have a base!
I made a three year plan and started dividing the tasks needed to reach competitive play and functional health within this timeline, and off I went.
The hardest thing for me is always to pace myself and not try to do everything at once. I have learned I am a very slow person and that it works for me, but I have to be patient and emotionally at peace with the fact that this flow suits me best. I update the template weekly or whenever I think of it to adjust goals based on how the journey is going.
I also have a backlog of random specific goals to pick from as I move along, these don't have timelines attached to them, they're just things I want to be able to learn or do at some point and that I can use as ready made ideas to keep on updating my templates. This is basically updated as I see people do cool stuff I'd like to do too ;)
Finally I have a support system: I share my goals with people I trust, who inspire me, and who I know will be honest with me when I go off track and support me when the going gets rough.
Now let's see how well I stick with it as the year goes :D
